Using your Cell Phone as a Modem for Free(Windows Mobile)

By

HTC 8925 (ATT TILT) Windows Mobile 6

Its Simple

This has been one of the best kept secrets for quite a while. In fact the cell phone companies don't want you to know how easy it is to share Internet from your windows mobile phone to your laptop or pc.

Instead my provider (ATT) asked when I got my new phone if i would like to get a (Tether) plan with my Internet package. I politely said no and left it at that.

So you are wondering how fast will it be. Well this will depend on your Cellphones wireless network in your location. For example while I'm in the city or in a well populated place and my phone has access to the 3g network I can download at up to 1 megabyte per second and that's 1 megabyte as in 1000 kilobytes.(yes i know its not an exact conversion but you get the idea) Ive been able to watch HD streaming video from ABC.com with no problems or lag. In fact its faster than my old dsl connection. But at my parents house in a rural town in NC I usually pick up the older EDGE/GPRS networks and its a good bit slower but still faster than dial up

Now HTC the company that manufactures my phone normally puts a shortcut to the program under the tools section on the phone. ATT deletes the shortcut in an effort to sell their tether plan. I'm assuming other providers will likely do this with their windows mobile 6 phones as well. So I decided to create this page to put a short tutorial on how to find the program.

What you will need.

  • A windows mobile 6 PDA/Cell phone
  • A usb Cable (blue-tooth if your phone/computer supports it)
  • A degree in computer Science (Just kidding its so easy well you know the geico adds)

Internet Sharing On the AT&T Tilt and other windows mobile 6 phones, Internet Sharing was replaced by Wireless Modem in Connections. While Internet Sharing is no longer listed in Connections, it is still present on the device and can be used.

To locate Internet Sharing:

  1. Go to Start>Programs>Tools>File Explorer.

  2. Open the Windows Folder.

  3. Scroll down until you locate Internet Sharing.

To add a shortcut to an existing folder on your device:

  1. Tap and Hold on Internet Sharing and select Copy from the pop up menu.

  2. Navigate to a folder where you would like to put your shortcut and select Menu>Edit>Paste.

To use Internet Sharing:

  1. Pair your device with your PC (Blue-tooth or USB).

  2. Locate the Internet Sharing shortcut you created and tap on it to open the application.

  3. Select PC Connection Type from the drop down.

  4. Select Network Connection Type from the drop down.

  5. Tap on Connect.

Older windows mobile 5 phones had a program called wireless modem which worked for a while but doesn't seem to work on windows vista. At the time my provider (att) released a free program that you installed on your pc and it was able to pull Internet from the phone. Unfortunately they discontinued it and started charging for the tether program. Still you may be able to find a program somewhere online to do it.

Hope this helps some of you
